Liverpool in for Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil?

Reports in today’s Sunday People have linked Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil with a move to Liverpool. The German international has not really lit up the Santiago de Bernabéu Stadium, since his £12.4 million move from Werder Bremen. Ozil move came on the back of some impressive performances in the 2010 World Cup, where he scored one goal, with three assists and a pass completion rate of 71%.

The inconsistent Germany star has been told by his manager Jose Mourinho, that he will be on his way next summer unless there is a marked improvement after Real’s drubbing in last weekends El Clasico, where they got beat 3-1 by Barcelona after going a goal up in the first minute.

The Sunday People goes on to report that Damien Comolli will keep an eye on developments and if Real signal they are willing to sell, then the Reds’ director of football will be looking to negotiate a deal.

I must admit I thought he looked good in the world cup and wondered then if we would put a bid in for him. But with our stated transfer policy I really don’t see this one happening. I think the signing of Scott Allen would be more of a priority. Both fit the age range with Ozil being only 23, but after this years European Championships he could come with a £15-20 Million price tag, where Allen could cost less than £500,000.

With Lucas who is 24, Adam now 26, Henderson 21 and Shelvey 19 our midfield looks sorted for the next couple of seasons and will grow together and will get better and stronger over the coming years. Only Steven Gerrard is the wrong side of 30 and will be 32 come the end of this season.

There is always going to be room for improvement and to kick on and buy players. But with the age of our current midfield this gives room for reserve team players to blend in to our pattern of play and grow into the team. Something we have all wanted to see happen for a long time. Bring home grown players though our youth system, only if they are good enough, but they need to be given the chance to prove they are good enough.
