Liverpool have moved into pole position to snap up Dundee United midfielder Scott Allen who has only played six first team games for The Terrors. The 20 year old is a Scotland under 21 international and both Rangers and Celtic have shown an interest.

Ally McCoist has spoken of his desire to sign the youngster, and has appealed to Allen, to put Scottish football before England. West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has registered his interest with a £400,000 bid, which has been accepted.

Allen’s contract runs out in the summer allowing the midfielder to speak to interested parties. With Kenny Dalglish and Daniel Comolli’s stated transfer policy to buy young British players both see Allen as one for the future alongside fellow Scotsman Charlie Adam.

Bill Shankly made one of his greatest buys from Dundee United in the man mountain that was Ron Yeats. If he goes on to have half the career the big man had for the reds, then it will be the best £400,000 we’ve spent.
